Registering custom nameservers

If you have a dedicated server or VPS from your hosting provider, you may be asked to register custom domain nameservers. These servers are your domain name, such as ns1.example.com (example is your domain name). Before you can add those nameservers to domain names, you need to register them:

How to register custom nameservers

  1. Log in to your Name.com account.
  2. Click on the MY DOMAINS link, located at the top of the navigation.
  3. Click the domain name you would like to manage.
  4. Click Nameserver Registration under the More Tools section Screenshot 2023-11-30 at 3.33.02 PM.png

  5. In the Hostname field, enter a prefix, such as NS1. In the IP Address field, enter the IP address that you need the nameserver to point to.
  6. Click the Register New Nameserver button.

Once you have created the nameservers, you can add them to any domain name you own.

Note: The error message "Error! Object association prohibits operation" means you need to create custom nameservers by following the instructions above. The error message also exists when the nameserver is not properly set up and passes registries nameserver requirements (like Verisign's .COM). As such you will want to reach out to your nameserver provider to make sure they have created the nameserver correctly, otherwise, you would want to request DNS records from them to connect your domain to their hosting by using Name.com Nameservers. Name.com Support has limited troubleshooting options for the nameserver in question, as we do not have control over the settings in third-party nameservers.
